The Cst. Brett Ryan Play it Forward Foundation is dedicated to helping underprivileged kids in our community get involved in sports. Money raised through adult sporting events goes directly towards covering the costs of sports registration, equipment, and other sports-related costs for kids who might not otherwise be able to afford them. Brett believed that sports and community engagement were essential for personal growth and development, and we strive to honour his legacy by providing these opportunities to young individuals.
Our goal is to make a real difference in the lives of these children by giving them the chance to play sports, learn valuable skills, and build confidence. By supporting the Cst. Brett Ryan Play it Forward Foundation, you directly contribute to the development and well-being of our community's youth.
Brett Ryan was an exceptional member of the Edmonton Police Service who was tragically killed in the line of duty, alongside Constable Travis Jordan, on March 16, 2023.
Brett was a humble, giving, thoughtful, and caring man. He was a devoted husband, an excited soon-to-be father, and an amazing friend—someone anyone would be lucky to have.
Before becoming a police officer, Brett served as a paramedic for several years. He was also an active member of Hockey Alberta, working as a referee for the City of Spruce Grove. Throughout his career, he mentored many people and took great pride in being a role model for others.
Brett was always thinking of ways to improve his community. Small acts of kindness were something he did frequently, but never sought attention for. One afternoon, Brett and his wife were at a local sporting goods store, standing in line to pay for their items, when they noticed a teenager beside them counting his cash. The teen realized he didn’t have enough to buy the hockey helmet he wanted. Without hesitation, Brett purchased the helmet for him, gave him a quick nod, and left the store. That was just the kind of person he was and the heart he had.
This act of generosity inspired the creation of the Cst. Brett Ryan Play It Forward Foundation, which aims to support children's sports organizations in the community where he grew up, played sports, started his family, and enjoyed being a part of.
